Anthony Singletary

–

Griffin, Georgia

If you were fortunate enough to know Anthony Rothwell Singletary, you probably have a story to tell.

Perhaps it was a kindness you never expected. A quiet joke that caught you off guard. A conversation that wandered from music, guitars to the art of the world around you.

He was not a man who demanded attention. In fact, his humility required nothing. However, he was a man who deserved it.

Born with the heart of an artist and the soul of a musician, he spent his life noticing beauty that others often never saw or passed right by. After graduating from Griffin High School in 1970, he attended the University of Georgia, earning a Bachelor degree in Business Administration in 1974. He spent many years appraising real estate. Yet anyone who knew him well knows that while his diploma hung in one field, his heart lived in another. He was happiest in an art studio with the smell of turpentine and oil, a jam session with fellow musicians, or hunting open local fields for Indian artifacts.

He was delightfully quirky, comfortably shy, and possessed a dry, unexpected wit that appeared just when you least expected it. Those who knew him well knew that behind this quiet demeanor was a playful spirit and a laugh worth waiting for.

Like every life, his was marked by both joy and heartache. Not every relationship found its way to the ending we would have wished, and not every wound finds healing in this life. But love is never measured by perfection. It is measured by the grace we extend, the beauty we leave behind, and the lives we touched along the way.

His life reminds us that greatness is rarely loud. Sometimes it looks like a gentle man with oil paint on his hands, music in his heart, a trunk full of Indian artifacts, and compassion that asks for nothing in return.

He leaves behind those who loved him deeply and who will forever miss his quiet presence, his generous spirit, and the unique way he made the world a little softer simply by living in it.

And for those of us who remain, perhaps the best way to honor him is to notice the beauty of this world a little more, laugh a little more unexpectedly, and love one another with the same quiet generosity that came so naturally to him.

That would be a masterpiece worthy of the man he was.

“The gallery is quieter now, but the Artist who gave him his gifts has welcomed him home.”

Tony is survived by his wife, Jody; his son, Beau (wife Jami); his daughter, Lauren Jo (fiancé, Mark Farrar); granddaughters; and his sister, Gloria Treadway; and several nieces and nephews.
