Mabel Joyce Bates Acton Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Mabel Joyce Bates Acton, 84, of Griffin, widow of Lonnie Nelson Acton, died Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Brightmoor Nursing Center. Born in Ft. Payne, AL, March 27, 1935, she was a daughter of the late Alvis and Bessie Yarborough Bates. She was a retired school teacher after over thirty years of service having taught at Upson County, Henry County and substituting for Spalding County Schools. Mrs. Acton was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Gladys Bates; a daughter, Kathy Vaughan; brothers and sisters, J.P. Bates, Sarah Katherine Studdard, Elmo Bates, Steve Bates, Milford Bates and Audrey Bates. Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Varnadoe and husband Ryan of Griffin; son-in-law, Craig Vaughan of Covington; grandchildren, Madeline Priest and Jessica Varnadoe; three sisters, Christine Bates, Jo Ann Bearden and husband Glen and Rosa Wilson, all of Alabama; three brothers, James Bates and wife Hazel and L.V. Bates, both of Florida and Roger Bates Alabama; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel Joyce Bates Acton will be conducted Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Griffin Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 10:00 AM until the service hour at the funeral home.
