Sara Canup Morris

Sara Canup Morris, age 83, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026. Born on December 19, 1942, Sara lived a life defined by love for her family, her faith, and the simple joy of time spent with others. Sara was married to the love of her life, Jim Morris, for 59 wonderful years. Their story began when they were introduced by his Aunt Cecile—and just six months later, they were married, beginning a lifetime of devotion and partnership. Together, they built a family that became Sara’s greatest pride and legacy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Morris; her parents, Grover and Ruby Canup; and her brothers, Charles, Gene, and James Canup. Sara is survived by her children: Tara Hammond; Scott (Jenny) Morris; Terry (Cathy) Morris; and Keith (Dani) Morris. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Lindsey (Roberto) Ortiz, Jennifer Morris, Christy Brock, Wesley (Kayla) Morris, Josh (Ashleigh) Morris, Brittany (James) Callaway, Nathan Hammond, and Ben Hammond, and a cherished great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her sister, Jeannette Houseworth, and many beloved steps, nieces and nephews. A faithful member of Orchard Hill Baptist Church since the 1960s, Sara’s life reflected her deep love for the Lord and her commitment to serving others. Over the years, she poured her time and energy into her community as a den mother, softball coach, VBS teacher, and room mother—always showing up wherever she was needed. If you knew Sara, you knew she could create just about anything. She was incredibly gifted, especially with her hands. From the mid-1970s through the late 1980s, she co-owned a craft business, Crafts by Sara & M.E., with her dear friend Mable Eller. What began with handmade denim and vinyl pocketbooks grew into creating full baby nurseries from her own original designs. Sara sewed countless outfits for her children over the years—everything from everyday clothes to suits, dresses, costumes, and even pageant dresses. Her talents extended beyond sewing into drawing and painting, where she left behind beautiful, lasting pieces. She painted a Noah’s Ark mural in the church nursery, a Winnie the Pooh nursery for Brittany, and a Georgia Bulldog mural for Wesley. Her final painting, completed in 2021, was a canvas for Brittany—a reflection of the love she continued to pour into her family throughout her life. Before dedicating herself fully to raising her family, Sara worked at Griffin Garment. Later in life, she returned to work at Best Manufacturing, where she formed lasting friendships. Even after retirement, she remained close with dear friends Elaine and Jerry, and they rarely missed gathering to eat together once or twice a month. Sara loved spending time with people, especially over a good meal. After Jim’s passing, she stayed connected through regular outings with her widow’s group from Orchard Hill, Glow from Christ Chapel, her Al-Anon group, and her Sunday School class. These friendships were a meaningful and joyful part of her life. Above all, Sara was the matriarch of her family—the one who brought everyone together. It was deeply important to her that family gatherings were open to all, and she took great joy in making sure no one was left out. Holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas were especially meaningful, not because of tradition alone, but because they were opportunities to gather, share, and love one another. Her home and her table were always open, and that spirit of inclusion and togetherness is a legacy her family will carry forward. Sara will be remembered for her creativity, her generosity, her unwavering faith, and the way she made everyone feel like they belonged. Her life was a beautiful example of love in action, and her impact will be felt for generations to come. Funeral services for Sara Canup Morris will be conducted Thursday, April 2, 2026, at 11:00 AM from the Chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Frank Winfrey officiating.
