Barbara Futral Turner

Mrs. Barbara Futral Turner of Griffin, GA passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024. Mrs. Turner was born in Griffin, GA on August 20, 1929, and was the only child of Gladys Westmoreland Futral and Robert Edward Futral. Mrs. Turner grew up in Griffin and graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. She then went on to receive her master’s in mathematics from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. After graduating from Auburn, Mrs. Turner began a career teaching Mathematics in the Griffin public school system. It was during this time that she fell in love and married a fellow Griffinite, William (Bill) Earl Turner in 1953. Mr. Turner’s career in textiles led them to live in Spartanburg, SC where they raised their five children until another career move led them to Hopedale, MA and then to East Greenwich, RI. Upon Mr. Turner’s retirement, Barbara and Bill returned to Griffin where Barbara assumed a leadership role in The Sock Shoppe, the company started by her parents and another business partner. Barbara and Bill shared 53 wonderful years of marriage until his death in 2006. She continued in her position at The Sock Shoppe where she was deeply involved in all financial decisions until her retirement at the age of 88. The newest location of the business in Auburn, Alabama is named in her honor and called B. Turners. Mrs. Turner loved spending time in their home in Highlands, NC. She enjoyed reading and solving logic puzzles. But most of all, she loved spending time with her family. Holidays were always chaotic with so many family members, but somehow Barbara made a great meal. Bill gave a solemn blessing and then we ate, played any and every popular board game, and went back to the table for homemade pies and cakes. Barbara always said her greatest happiness in life was having children and as an only child herself, felt blessed to have five healthy children who she loved dearly. Mrs. Turner is survived by five children, nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren: Judith A. Turner of Griffin, GA and her son Robert Fleming and his wife Marin of Tokyo, Japan; Meredith Turner DePalma and her husband Al of Fayetteville, GA, their daughter Cari Anderson and her husband Stephen and their children Will and Lucy, and their daughter Allison Wood and her husband Hays of Atlanta, GA and their children Avery and Olivia; William Futral Turner and his wife Ann of Griffin, GA and their children Sarah Turner Taboada and her husband Ignacio of Atlanta, GA and their son Luca, Elizabeth Turner of Los Angeles, CA and Harrison Turner of Atlanta, GA; David Lawrence Turner and his wife Martha of Peachtree Crossings, GA and their children Jack Turner and his fiancé Molly Rea, Nick Turner of Atlanta, GA and Claire Turner of Alanta, GA; and Christopher Scott Turner and his husband Paul Harris of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by her dear cousin Edith Westmoreland Newby of Griffin, GA and beloved nieces and nephews. At Mrs. Turner’s request, a private ceremony will be held at Haisten McCullough Funeral Home in Griffin, GA on Monday, June 3.
