Aura Tamson Fortney Russell

Aura Tamson Fortney Russell, 49, of Milner, passed away August 31, 2023, at Brightmoor Hospice, surrounded by her loving family. Aura was a devoted wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was a daughter of the late Linda Fortney. Aura was a graduate of Griffin High School and attended Gordon State University. She was very successful and conscientious state employee for twenty-five years. Aura began her career with the Georgia Department of Corrections in 2004, as the Administrative Assistant for the Director of Probation Operations. She was promoted to Confidential Assistant for the Corrections Division in 2009. Aura served in this capacity until 2013, when she transferred to the State Board of Pardons and Parole as a Program Analyst for the MORE Program. In 2015, Aura accepted the position of Compliance Monitor with the Misdemeanor Probation Oversight Unit. She also currently served as the Liaison for the Board of the Department of Community Supervision. Aura had held the position of Secretary for several professional associations. She had been actively involved as the Secretary with Georgia Probation Association (GPA) for 3 years, Secretary with the Parole Association of Georgia (PAOG) for 1 year and Secretary with the Georgia Professional Association of Community Supervision (GPACS) for 4 years. Aura is survived by her husband of eighteen years, Ashley Dwight Russell of Milner. She was the mother of Jacob Hugh Russell and the sister of Margaret Annette Ashley and Rebecca Fortney. Her father, William J. Fortney and mother-in-law, Gloria Skinner survive as well as her father-in-law, Carter Russell; brother-in-law, Kenny Russell and wife Heidi; nieces, Naomi Ashley and Anniston Russell and fiancé, Dylan Brubaker; nephews, Nathan, Jude and Sam Ashley, Bradley Russell and Cameron Russell. Funeral services for Aura Russell will be conducted Sunday, September 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM from the Chapel of Haisten McCullough Funeral Home with her brother-in-law, Reverend Eric Ashley officiating. Burial will follow at 6:30 PM at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 PM until the service hour at the funeral home.
